At the Isaccea Border Crossing

March 12, 2022

Around 2,000 people everyday are crossing from Ukraine to Romania by ferry across the Danube River at the Isaccea Border Crossing station. Most people seemed in relatively good spirits on Saturday, although there were plenty of tired and worried faces.

It’s been cold and cloudy the last couple of days, but today it was at least sunny. Most people are traveling on a mix of buses, trains, and on foot, which means they have to deal with the elements. Others are lucky enough to travel by car. Volunteers handed out food and hot drinks to people before they got on free buses headed to Bucharest.

It took Elena two days by car to reach the border from Kharkiv, so far one of the hardest hit cities in the country. She has a long way to go — she’ll stay with her sister-in-law in Switzerland.

“We took what we could take, we didn’t have much time and had to leave quickly because [Russia] is bombing there,” she said. “I just wish for peace for everyone, this is the most important thing.”
